The discreet and committed luxury

If you are a fan of social media, particularly TikTok, you have undoubtedly come across the phenomenon of Quiet Luxury. What is it? The story goes that this trend emerged in early 2023 through Gwyneth Paltrow during her trial following a skiing accident that occurred in 2016. The actress appeared each day in court adorned with looks that were as elegant as they were sharp, designed by the greatest creators… all in complete discretion. Indeed! "Quiet Luxury" or "discreet luxury" is the Holy Grail for enthusiasts of Quiet Luxury. Gone are the ostentatious monograms, logoed accessories, and the bling-bling of the 2010s: today, elegance is about sobriety, comfort, and quality. Fashion is returning to the basics and mocking the codes of the "ultra-rich" in favor of refined minimalism and high-quality garments with simple cuts. The goal is no longer to display one's social status through lavish means, but to advocate for more discreet values. Quiet Luxury is thus also indicative of a social and economic orientation of the time.

Quiet Luxury as a societal phenomenon

Although it may appear as a simple trend, Quiet Luxury is more complex than it seems as it actually reflects a societal phenomenon. Throughout history, every period of economic crisis has led to a return to silent basics through a clean and modest fashion, as if to avoid dividing different social classes. In 2008, for example, following the global economic crisis, fashion became neutral with the "No logo" trend, as if to return to essentials that everyone can afford. Today, Quiet Luxury also promises the comeback of timeless essentials at a time when inflation persists and impacts consumers' purchasing power. In 2024, luxury means not needing to show it to know that one has succeeded. And while it is often thought that neutral tones and seemingly simplistic cuts appeal more to higher socio-professional categories, Generation Z demonstrates the opposite. More aware of environmental and societal issues than boomers and Generation X, Gen Z uses social media to advocate for slow fashion and thus, a return to understated fashion, but made from sustainable and premium materials.

An elegant and timeless fashion

But concretely, how do you create a Quiet Luxury look? The answer is quite simple: make a 360° turn! Goodbye flashy jewelry, ultra-short skirts, and other wedge soles: let go of excess and return to the fundamentals of fashion. A coat with a perfect cut, a perfectly tailored pair of jeans, a satin blouse… Display a look that appears understated from afar, but is actually far from it. As soon as one approaches your silhouette, every subtlety should emerge to reveal the delicacy of your outfit. Pay particular attention to materials and details, synonymous with quality: engraved cufflinks, an embroidered Peter Pan collar, topstitched pockets… These will be the hallmarks of impactful Quiet Luxury. In terms of palette, focus on neutral and monochrome colors: beige, nude, gray, black, navy blue… Forget saturated tones in favor of refined colors. Finally, enhance your outfit with strong pieces: invest, for example, in a leather bag, preferably handheld for a preppy effect or crossbody for a casual version, or in designer black pumps, a timeless must-have.
